Periodic table posters are dime a dozen, but a periodic table quilt, now that's something to write home about! These quilts take about four hours of continuous stitching on a full-frame robotic quilting system (visible in some of the photos below) and contain over 120,000 stitches. They include the name, atomic number, and symbol for all the known elements, all rendered purely in stitches.
We offer several standard thread and fabric combinations, or for a bit more we can custom-make one with whatever thread color you like, in several fabric choices.
Using a thread color similar to the fabric color results in a subtle, sculptural look in which texture and depth do all the communicating. A strongly contrasting thread color makes for a more direct, literal periodic table look.
These are real quilts like you could put on your bed and stay warm under (modeled here by our beautiful spokesmodel and co-founder Nina Paley.)
Or you can get them stretched on a wooden frame to hang on the wall, like the art that they truly are. (Shown are a mounted black-fabric periodic table from the front, and a different design of quilt from the back showing how the wooden frame mounting system works.
In case you're wondering how this is actually done, here is a short video showing a single element tile being stitched
The quilts are a little under 8 feet wide and 4 feet high (about 2.4m x 1.2m). This pretty much covers a twin size bed completely, and for larger beds it's like one of those pointless yet decorative extra quilts they put across the bottom of the bed in fancy hotels.
These are robust, practical quilts. The fabric on both sides is high grade 200-thread-count, 100% cotton broadcloth. The batting is high-loft 100% polyester. They can be machine washed in cold or warm water and tumbled dry.
Our production capacity is limited to about two per day (due to the long robot stitching time). Orders are filled in the order received, and you will be notified by email when your quilt is being stitched so you can watch the process live on our stitchcam, if you like. If you have any questions or would like to request custom fabric, batting, or thread choices beyond what's listed below, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Because each quilt is custom made to order, we can create just about any variation imaginable.
