Quilts and More Quilts!
On this page you will find a variety of quilts for sale, which is kind of surprising, all things considered. We (Theodore Gray, and my girlfriend Nina Paley) have no history of selling quilts (I'm an author and Nina is an animator), but we kind of got into it after Nina bought a machine the size of a small room whose only function is to make quilts. A lot of quilts.
What we make are called "whole cloth" quilts, which means that both the front and back sides are a single piece of cloth, rather than stitched together out of many patches (which is the whole point of classic "piecework" quilts). What makes our quilts interesting isn't the cloth, but the stitching. We use Nina's artistic skill combined with my programming work to create highly complex stitching patterns that can only be executed by the sort of stitching robot we happen to have.
See below for the quilt designs we currently have for sale.
A fabulously nerdy quilt for an irrationally low price: $133.13 (the fourth root of pi) for a 46" square version and $314.15 for the full Queen size (94" square)! This beautiful, warm, puffy quilt displays over a hundred digits of pi rendered entirely in stitches for a gorgeous sculptural look. 100% cotton top and back fabric with 100% polyester batting. There is a choice of fabric and thread colors, but we strongly recommend unbleached cotton with natural unbleached thread. This allows the texture to really stand out.
This quilt contains an infinite number of digits of pi...at least conceptually. In practice only about the first 5800 are actually readable, and after about 10,000 they have gotten so small that they are less than one stitch wide. The last infinity digits are represented by a single stitch. The purest form of this quilt is round, but we also have a square version (same circular design, but with the corners filled in with a simple pattern).
Unlike most of our other quilts, this one is made with wool batting, so it is thinner and drapes more like a traditional quilt.
This animated quilt consist of twelve frames of Eadweard Muybridge's 1878 photographic study of the horse in motion. The quilt as a whole presents all twelve frames as a 94" square high-loft quilt. Display it on a wall or use it on a queen- or king-sized bed. It doesn't actually move!
Each horse is rendered with a different beautiful batik fabric thorough a reverse appliqué process. The quilt is stitched with individual layers of batik for each horse, covered by a layer of black fabric over everything. After stitching is complete the black fabric covering the area of each horse is cut away, revealing the batik underneath. The thread color of the pattern surrounding each horse beautifully reflects the unique colors in each horse.
This quilt is technically machine washable, but raw-edge applique is delicate so please don't wash it too often - and dry clean only if you want to make sure it doesn't shrink or pucker.
The $1000 quilt is an intricately stitched nearly 8-foot wide interpretation of the 1934 bill bearing the likeness of Grover Cleveland. It is available strictly at face value.
We can make a quilt out of any set of words you like! We'll even do naughty words, if that's what you want. When you place your order you'll have a chance to specify which words specifically you want. Keep in mind that the fewer words there are, the better they will look: 10-30 words maximum is a good target. "Happy Birthday Bob"? The sky's the limit on quilted word cleverness.
Reverse appliqué letters (which means different color fabric for the letters) is available for an extra charge. (If you know what reverse appliqué is and are willing to do your own cutting out of the letters, you can order at the regular price and ask add a comment that you'd like double fabric so you can cut our your letters: No extra charge for that.)
Include special requests for fabric color or layout in the form you will get on checkout and we'll get back to you if there's any trouble with your choices.
